CFA Institute Research Challenge Hong Kong Local Final 2015-16

BBA-FA and BBA-Banking and Finance Students
September – November 2015

Selwyn HO, Ella CHENG, Douglas LO, and Mathew LEUNG (BBA-FA, Year 2) with Benson CHAN from BBA-Banking and Finance Concentration

This was the first year that Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) participated in this competition. The Research Challenge is a world-class competition, designed to promote best practices in research among the next generation of analysts through mentoring and intensive training in company analysis. The representing team consisted of five students from BBA–Financial Analysis and BBA – Banking & Finance, including Selwyn Ho, Benson Chan, Ella Cheng, Douglas Lo, and Mathew Leung. It was an honour to have Mr Samuel Lee, Dr David Chui and Dr Nigel Wilkins as our mentors. They shared their valuable experiences in the industry and coached them throughout the competition.

They have learnt a great deal from the company assigned to their team, which was Skyworth Digital Holdings Limited. In order to obtain first-hand information, they kept in close contact with the company. It provided them a taste of how financial analysts work in the real world. Bloomberg terminal training workshops provided by the HKSFA equipped them with the necessary skills for analysing the company.

On the day of the Report Presentation and Award Ceremony, teams presented their findings to a panel of three portfolio managers. The judges were highly impressed by their research and presentation, recognising their efforts throughout the competition. Although this was the first time that HSMC participated in the competition, judges were surprised and pleased with their overall performance and looked forward to HSMC’s participation in the future.

It was an honour to represent HSMC. They would like to express their heartfelt gratitude towards Dr David Chui in giving this opportunity, thereby gaining valuable experiences. They are also thankful to have received assistance and support from their mentors. They are looking forward to next year’s competition and hope that they can achieve better results.

Participants were required to produce a prototype and a marketing plan for their business ideas within 168 hours and to give a presentation to the panel consisting of start-uppers and representatives from major technology companies and government officials.

The team created a webpage entitled “TravelUs” which serves as an agency to let travellers select their preferred tour guide in advance and tailor-make their itinerary in order to explore the local culture of Hong Kong.
