2017 HSMC Founders’ Day Youth Development Forum & Reception

Hang Seng Management College (HSMC), re-structured in 2010 and recognised for its continuous success in providing high-quality community education for over 37 years, celebrated its 7th anniversary on 16th March 2017. On this memorable day, a 2017 HSMC Founders’ Day Youth Development Forum & Reception cum Launching Ceremony of Three Research Centres were held.  More than 800 guests attended the activities including members of the Board of Governors and College Council, representatives from allied organisations, as well as HSMC staff and students.

To tie in with HSMC’s priority on students’ all-round development, “Break Through the Limits” was adopted as the theme of “2017 HSMC Founders’ Day Youth Development Forum”.  Hosted by President S M Ho and attended by two guest speakers, Mr Francis NGAI, Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Social Ventures Hong Kong and Mr Quincy WONG, Group Chairman and Executive Director of Convoy Global Holdings, the forum attracted over 500 guests, teachers and students. Mr Francis NGAI encouraged young people not to simply complain about the limitations on their personal development arisen out of the social environment, but to understand what the reality is, and change their ways of thinking and accomplish more in their work. During his sharing, Mr Quincy WONG emphasised that daydreaming simply achieves nothing. Only with action can one’s dreams come true. He encouraged young people to have dreams and act on them.

Held immediately after the forum, the Founder’s Day Reception cum Launching Ceremony of Three Research Centres was attended by more than 300 guests who witnessed the memorable moment. Dr Mosses CHENG Mo Chi, Chairman of College Council, officiated the Ceremony and expressed his gratitude to the Board of Governors, College Council, donors, academic staff, alumni and students for their concerted efforts. He also gave heart-felt thanks to the community for its strenuous support which had helped HSMC to achieve significant progress within a few years. Dr Cheng wished the College greater success in its efforts to nurture the younger generations, contribute to the community, and thus creating a better future.

In his speech, President S M HO thanked the community deeply for its continuous support and care to make HSMC’s development possible. Some recent developments of the College were also highlighted including “Platinum” rating of BEAM Plus certification received by four new campus buildings, some $20 million funding given by UGC Research Grants Council,  funding received under the Government Self-Funded Education Fund Quality Enhancement Scheme (QESS), the  launching of an employment platform "JINESS" for students together with other self-financing education institutions, as well as some outstanding performances of our students in various local and regional competitions. President Ho called for continuous community support to HSMC in its step-up efforts in talent development and further contribution to higher education with private capital and collective wisdom from the general public.

While the integration of academic research and teaching is one of the major goals of HSMC, its academic staff actively participate in different external funded research projects. The College has established three research centres this year, namely the Deep Learning Research & Application Centre, Policy Research Institute of Global Supply Chain and Virtual Reality and Big Data Analytics Centre. Professor Y V HUI, Vice-President (Academic and Research) of HSMC shared in his speech that HSMC encouraged academics to actively participate in researches, and the College had received over $70 million funding in three years, the highest among all self-financing higher education institutions. HSMC is committed to the development of interdisciplinary research, stresses innovation on academic development and teaching, emphasises the applications of research results and their contributions, as well as providing professional intelligence for the government and different sectors.

During the reception, HSMC presented the "President's Outstanding Student Awards" to Mr David Poon, a Business Administration programme graduate, for his outstanding performance in academic and other extracurricular activities. David recalled the significant gain in personal development during his four-year study at HSMC and thanked the College for providing a platform for him to realise his dream.
